Ouray and the Surrounding Vicinity

Ouray was established in 1876 as a mining town, and people from all over the world came to seek their fortune. Gold, silver and other precious metals were mined until well into the 20th century.

People still come from all over the world to admire Ouray’s history, beauty, and wonderful weather. Called “The Switzerland of America”,
and “The Jeep Capital of America”, Ouray’s winters are like a fairyland. Ice climbers come to the Ice Climbing Festival in mid-January. Summers are perfection, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s, low humidity, and midday rains to keep everything green.

Ouray is the perfect central location for exploring not only the high mountains in the immediate area with its Jeep roads and hiking, but to travel to such places as:

Silverton to ride the Durango-Silverton steam-powered train.
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
The Colorado National Monument
The Telluride ski area
Mesa Verde National Park between Cortez and Durango
The red rock country of Utah and its amazing national parks
